Born into a fundamentalist Christian family and educated at Cambridge, he was vilified as a traitor, drug addict, and debaucher, yet revered as perhaps the most influential thinker in contemporary esotericism. I contributed to the anthology on "Aleister Crowley and Western Esotericism" (Oxford University Press, 2012); co-edited, with Henrik Bogdan, a collection of essays on "Occultism in a Global Perspective (Acumen, 2013; reprint Routledge, 2014); and wrote a book about the influence of Indian, primarily Hindu, spirituality on Western occultism, "India and the Occult" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014).
